What are the symptoms of a drive geometry problem on SCO Unix?

A formerly working boot drive gives "stage 1 boot failure" or "/boot not found"; or `divvy` shows the expected number of filesystems, but incorrect types (usually "NON-FS"), and they can't be mounted.
