Why does SCO Unix syslog fill up with "#2 open of pid file failed: No such file or directory" messages ?

Because something (probably /usr/lib/cleantmp) has removed /usr/tmp/ftpd See https://aplawrence.com/cgi-bin/ta.pl?arg=107639 to fix cleantemp by adding "! -name ftpd" to cleantmp's "find" command.
