Microsoft doesn't want to lose to Linux, so to get the bid, they cut the price of XP bundled with Office to - are you ready - $36.00. Even more interesting, they took out the Activation requirement.

Of course, that was for a million piece order, but even so Microsoft isn't making money on that deal. Read about it here: https://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11058.

Microsoft is using a "beat Linux" slush fund to make these deals, but it's going to hurt them (couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys). Big corporate users are going to use the Linux threat to negotiate sweet-heart deals for sure.

Of course, it doesn't have to be just a threat, does it?
