Lost in OS X I had a partner once who claimed that he had a "mental map of the universe" in his head. His ability to avoid getting lost may have been slightly better than mine; some of us get turned around and confused more often than others. On the highways, that means I'm sometimes wasting expensive gasoline (yes, yes, I know I could buy a GPS mapping system) but on my computer it's either a window, a file or my mouse that I have lost track of.
Ding, dong, the Cron is dead Mac OS X Leopard does not use cron. It uses /usr/sbin/periodic which comes to us by way of Leopard's BSD roots. BSD uses cron to run "periodic", but Leopard uses "Launchdaemon". You can see the files in /System/Library/Launchdaemons; there are many, but only three we care about in this context:

When I'm asked about preventing such abuse, I always explain that we can certainly record and even control internet access, but my experience has been that it's usually a non-issue.
