2005/07/28 Digg - a better Slashdot?

Digg is a tech oriented web site where the users submit and rank stories. Sounds just like Slashdot, doesn't it? Well, yes, but Slashdot is more news oriented whereas Digg is news plus whatever. But in many ways, these two are very similar. Right this minute, I think Digg has better and more interesting stories, although one current problem is that the same story shows up two or three times; that happens on Slashdot too, but less often and usually with more time lapse between the postings.

Of course, the quality and ranking of stories is controlled by the users, so if all the (expletive deleted) Slashdot folks piled over to Digg en masse, I would imagine that Digg would start to have the same problems that Slashot has now. Any user controlled ranking system is obviously going to reflect its users, especially in the comments area. That's the place that most with ambivalent feelings toward Slashdot are apt to complain about: too many comments, too many jerks. Digg, at least right now, attracts fewer comments and they seem to me to be of higher quality.

Whether this shininess lasts is the question. For now, I like Digg and you probably will too.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
