2005/06/14 Fitt's Law

Fitt's Law concerns itself with our ability to "acquire a target" - in the computer world, find and click on something we want. It says the ease of doing that is function of the distance to the target, and the size of the target. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts'_law.

In the real world, there is of course much more to it - the smoothness and predicability of motion (Meyer's law takes some of that into account) and the behavior of the target when it can be selected are important factors also - good design means more than just direct attention to Fitt's Law. Usability covers a lot of ground. However, that doesn't stop people from using Fitt's Law as part of an OS feature shoot-off: http://www.xvsxp.com/general/#fittsLaw compares Mac OS X to Windows XP (OS X wins, by the way - duh!).

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
