Q-File IT Professional Organiser

This is nice.

First, it's a compact command and file format reference set, nicely packaged in a small (6.25" x 7.5") 6 ring binder. The binder has pockets for a couple of CD's, another set of pockets for business cards or even a floppy or two. There's nothing cheap about any of it; its all first class- even the pen included is of high quality. This is something you could give as a gift to any IT person and they'd definitely appreciate it and remember you.

The set I reviewed has the OSR5 command set. You can also get versions for Windows NT, Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 and Oracle 8. In addition to the alphabetical commands and file formats pages, it has sections for keeping notes on specific servers: partition layouts, support call logs, installed equipment, backup schedules/logs, software logs, and even records of training classses you've taken. There's a handy TCP/IP subnetting chart, vi, awk and sendmail reference pages, Bourne, Korn and Csh references, and of course the obligatory ASCII chart. It's perfect for any administrator or consultant-this will definitely be something I'll be carrying with me from now on!

See http://www.q-file.com for a complete list of contents.

The command references aren't man pages; these are quick guides to the usage and the arguments and possible flags- just what you need when you are temporarily stuck. I didn't review the NT or other versions, but I'm sure they are of similar quality.

You can order these directly from their web site: http://www.q-file.com. Prices are given in English pounds (this is a U.K. based company), but your credit card gets correctly charged with U.S. dollars or the proper currency for whatever country you are ordering from. As I said above, this is a high quality set- even the box it comes in is unusual- you'd expect it to contain a silver tray or the like. If you are looking for an unusual and high quality gift for an employee, a client, or even yourself- this is it.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
