Google Wave will change the world

2009/06/06

The Google Wave Developer Preview above is an hour and twenty minutes long. It's hard for most of us to find that big a chunk of free time; I couldn't do it until Saturday and even then I was only able to do it because it rained so that yard work had to wait. Never mind: it's important, you need to find the time.

The title is "Developer Preview", I emphatically want you to understand that it doesn't matter if you are a developer, a blogger or just someone who uses their computer for email and browsing only: you need to watch this. Google Wave is the future and it's going to affect so many things that it will be years before the dust all settles and we realize how much this little preview meant.

I don't think most of the folks who have written about Google Wave realize what this could mean. It could mean big problems for Microsoft. It definitely means big changes for bloggers, for sites like Twitter, Facebook and everyone else. It could eventually kill email, at least as we know it now. This is big, big, big.

I can easily imagine this website being taken over by Wave. I can easily imagine that any site that doesn't let Wave in will have a hard time surviving. This IS "Web 4.0", Internet Next Generation, the mother of all paradigm shifts..

No, I'm not joking. Google Wave will replace blogging as we know it. It will replace SharePoint, email, even affect collaborative programming. Google Wave will affect and infiltrate applications and apps will be writen specifically to run within its framework. It kills Instant Messaging, translation tools.. it touches so many things that I'm going to need days to even start thinking about all of it. It's that big.

Do you think I'm exaggerating? If anything, I'm probably understating the importance. This is a tsunami wave that's going to sweep over the Internet. Again, I'm not kidding. Google Wave is very serious and important and I doubt anyone can fully comprehend how far reaching this could be.

Go watch the video. If you disagree, tell me why. I don't think you will.

I agree with you 100 percent on this, and yet it seems like a lot of people who are supposedly "in the know" with tech do not think much of this.

(Maybe they are too busy on Twitter trying to sell their latest pyramid scheme e-course.)

I looked at this and thought, "yeah, this will be a big shift, and anyone who doesn't get it will be left behind".

I mean, I thought to myself of all the ways I could use this with my work. Amazing.

hmmm....Isn't' this in Revelations or something? This could be a sign of the impending Apocalypse.

In all seriousness, one of my thoughts while watching the simultaneous translations happening was that this could facilitate communication with the world.

Of course, as Fox News tries to remind us, bullets and bombs are much better than words.

@Friar,

Google Wave where we work would be the sign of the impending Apocalypse for sure.

I'm guessing you've not watched the video, but considering most of the people in our "highly technical company" (ho ho ho) still don't know that the right mouse button does something, they probably would think that the ability to work on a document simultaneously in real-time with someone else was the mark of the Beast.

And heaven forbid we use instant messaging. Of course, we haven't been able to do that, ever. I guess people never waste time talking in hallways or reading newspapers in their offices, they need IM programs to do that!

One of the interesting things about a Wave is how Adsense will fit into it. Obviously the operator of the Wave server will control that, but it could make sharing revenues with contributors much easier.

Another aspect is spam control. If we eventually swap Wave for email, controlling Spam should become a bit easier. There's still room for someone to present false credentials, but it should be less.

Then there's the whole Microsoft thing. This could kill their document business, and that's pretty damn important to the bottom line.

Of course Microsoft could embrace the technology and sell plugins, but I think they are too greedy to go in that direction.
