FEMA Favoring IE? Yes and no..

There's been a great deal of fuss and furor over a Slashdot story about FEMA requiring IE6 to register for disaster relief.

There's enough truth there to bitch about, but it isn't completely accurate. A number of people have reported that they can use Opera on Mac or Linux without any apparent problem (though the reports I read all said that they didn't actually complete the application because they weren't hurricane victims). From http://www.fema.gov/register.shtm:

Does the online application require Internet Explorer?

Yes and no.

Currently to complete your application online you must be using
Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6.0 or above. We are in the process
of modifying the application so that it will be available to
additional browsers.

If you do not have Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, you may still
be able to check the status of your application and update your
information online once you have registered by phone.

No doubt some web designer has already had their butt chewed raw over this, and no doubt it will be changing soon, and also no doubt that this debacle will cause other agencies to look more closely at their own technology barriers. Therefore, some good may come from it after all.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
