Playing poker on line has become very popular. You can find games on line any time, day or night, from one on one to multi-table tournaments. Having opponents of all skill levels available whenever you want is wonderful.
Learning to play poker well requires practise, but practising with real money can be expensive lessons indeed. That's why almost all on-line casinos also offer "play money" areas where you can play against other people without risking anything. Unfortunately, because there is no risk involved, many of the opponents you'll find in these areas don't take it seriously, so your practise isn't very useful: people don't react as they would in a real, money at risk game.
Another problem for those of us who like to avoid Windows is that almost all of the on-line places only have Windows software clients. That's why I was delighted to find Poker School On Line. Not only can you find serious competition here without blowing a lot of money, but they have a Mac OS X version of their software.
Poker School On Line does have an entirely free section, but to find the more serious players, you need to become a member: $14.95/month or $149.95 for a year. Members have access to help forums, training material, and games against other players who are competing both for standing in the community and for the chance to win cash money sponsorship at a real tournament. Because of this, members take the practise games seriously and play as though it were real. Therefore, your skills get real practise.
The Mac client software installs easily and quickly, and looks identical to the Windows version, though perhaps just a little darker on my iBook screen. I did have more trouble with temporary disconnects and slowness than I have experienced at other casinos, but this was no fault of the Mac software: the Windows version had the same problems. These actually turned out to be a problem with my router - I happened to change it for other reasons and the problem went away!
If you enjoy poker, but don't want to risk a lot of money, give this a try. The availability of other players is not quite as high as it is at places like PartyPoker.com, but the level of play in the practise areas makes up for that.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.
Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
