Fri Jan 21 20:48:32 2005 An example of
poorly commented code...
Posted by Bruce Garlock
This one is a little amusing, and deserves some kind of award for perl "one-liners", and belongs on a tee-shirt! I was searching for something that could be used to takes URL's in a text file, and automatically turns them into links. I came across this page, which claims to do what I was looking for, but I don't have a clue as to how it works. Sure, it looks imopressive, but how is someone supposed to follow that?
I had a discussion with someone today about commenting code, and how important it is, since there are usually more than one way to achieve results when it comes to Perl or PHP. Having properly documented code goes a long way for the next person, when it comes time to grok your work.
Here it is:
http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Cookbook/Rx/Recipe/59864
In case the URL ever expires, here is the on-liner:
$string =~ s< (?: <a href="http://(?:(?:(?:(?:(?:[a-zA-Z/d](?:(?:[a-zA-Z/d]|-)*[a-zA-Z/d])?)/."> http://(?:(?:(?:(?:(?:[a-zA-Z\d](?:(?:[a-zA-Z\d]|-)*[a-zA-Z\d])?)\.</a> )*(?:[a-zA-Z](?:(?:[a-zA-Z\d]|-)*[a-zA-Z\d])?))|(?:(?:\d+)(?:\.(?:\d+) ){3}))(?::(?:\d+))?)(?:/(?:(?:(?:(?:[a-zA-Z\d$\-_.+!*'(),]|(?:%[a-fA-F \d]{2}))|[;:@&=])*)(?:/(?:(?:(?:[a-zA-Z\d$\-_.+!*'(),]|(?:%[a-fA-F\d]{ 2}))|[;:@&=])*))*)(?:\?(?:(?:(?:[a-zA-Z\d$\-_.+!*'(),]|(?:%[a-fA-F\d]{ 2}))|[;:@&=])*))?)?)|(?:ftp://(?:(?:(?:(?:(?:[a-zA-Z\d$\-_.+!*'(),]|(? I still cannot read that mess, and the person who wrote this, has some amazing patience.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. I think that would take me more than a little while to figure out..
I think there are easier ways :-)

Every time I look at it, I chuckle. Crazy thing, is that it works. I just have no idea how. For all I know, it could be placing some kind of small trojan on my system, if I ran it as root :-) I highly doubt that, but it looks like gibberish to me, so I am ignorant as to how it works, so I certainly will not use it. I will consult my Perl Cookbook for a recipe :-)

Wow. that's impressive.
Looks like somebody was trying to make gigantic bad anime ascii art and the terminal threw up on them.

That's a prety good description, Drag. I wonder how long it took to write this thing. The crazy thing is that it actually works. I chose a different method, but this could be used to give the same results - it shows how many different ways you can express things in Perl.

This regex is created programmatically. Abigail wrote the program that writes out the regex. The program uses many smaller regexes that match various RFCs for URIs. It is safe to use this regex, if you like the results. I think it's a little overdone--do you really need all those URIs matched? Maybe you should modify the generator program to not include things you do not expect to be parsing, such as LDAP, gopher, telnet, prospero, etc.

And in fact, the URL does spit out a 404. I may have asked this before, but I cannot remember the answer. Is it OK to copy/paste someone else's work, as long as you provide the link from which you are copying it from, and the author's name (if available)?
I had to show this to someone today. I really think I am going to geek out with this one, and print it out on a T-shirt.

The answer is "It depends". It has to fall under "fair use" if the author has not specifically granted permission. Whether or not someting is "fair" is always subject to argument so if the author complains, I'd say let it go.
